At the same time, Vice-President Vitaly Gabniya said: "We knew a little earlier that the Syrian Arab Republic recognized the Republic of Abkhazia and the Republic of South Ossetia. This happened on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the Victory in the War of Abkhazia and the 10th anniversary of recognition of the independence of the Republic of Abkhazia by the Russian Federation, as well as on the 7th anniversary of Sergey Bagapsh's death. Such an event is significant for us. We congratulate the whole multinational people of Apsny! »

RA Foreign Minister Daur Kove acquainted the participants with the text of the joint communiqué between the Government of the Republic of Abkhazia and the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic. The text of the document reads in part: "The Republic of Abkhazia and the Syrian Arab Republic declare mutual recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries at the embassy level, which reflects their common desire to develop relations in all areas."

Daur Kove described the events that preceded the process of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries: "It must be recalled that since the beginning of the armed conflict in Syria in 2011, the Republic of Abkhazia has openly supported the actions of the Syrian leadership aimed at combating international terrorism and establishing peace and stability in region. Despite the absence of common borders, our countries have long historical ties that arose as a result of the resettlement of our compatriots to the territory of Syria, where they had the opportunity to live and develop. It is well known that the foreign Abkhaz diaspora is widely represented in Syria. Many of our compatriots hold key positions in government bodies and law enforcement agencies, enjoy the deserved respect and authority in the Syrian society. Given the difficulties encountered by representatives of the Abkhaz-Adygea diaspora as a result of the fighting in Syria, the Republic of Abkhazia undertook to ensure conditions for the process of repatriation of our compatriots to their historical homeland. As a result of these actions, more than 500 people were repatriated, they live in Abkhazia and contribute to the development of our state. These actions did not go unnoticed by the top leadership of Syria, since Abkhazia was practically the only country that granted asylum to Syrian citizens. Along with this, Abkhazia continued to use various opportunities to draw the attention of the international community to the conflict in Syria. In November 2016 there in Sukhum was held an international roundtable on "Syria: distant and close", organized by the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Abkhazia, at which were invited Russian and international experts. At the same time, the RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs periodically made official statements on the situation in Syria, which expressed full support for the legitimate Syrian leadership and its course aimed at combating international extremism and terrorism. "

In addition, Kove noted the special role of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Abkhazia that made a significant contribution to the development of the Abkhaz-Syrian relations: "Thanks to the efforts of the CCI, it was possible to receive an official invitation from the Syrian side for participation in Damascus international exhibition and organize a number of other meetings at a high level. "
Kove emphasized that over the past few years, as a result of well-coordinated work of various departments and structures, it was possible to achieve close and fruitful cooperation with Syrian colleagues, whose apogee was the establishment of official diplomatic relations between our countries.
For his part, Parliament Speaker Valery Kvarchiya stressed that today one more step has been taken in the formation of the state: "I congratulate the people of Abkhazia on behalf of the Parliament and personally on myself on this event. This recognition was preceded by a lot of work. "
