RA MFA calls on the Georgian side to stop politicizing the facts related to the state of the monuments located on the territory of Abkhazia
Sukhum. January 11. Apsnypress. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia noticed voiced by Georgian officials fact of damage to a monument of historical and cultural heritage in the construction of the landfill in Tsebelda village, Gulripsh district of Abkhazia.
The commentary says:
"First of all, it should be noted that the statement for the construction of military ground does not correspond to reality. There is already landfill in Tsebelda, located in the enjoyment of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Abkhazia. In accordance with the signed bilateral agreements between Abkhazia and Russia, the Abkhaz side may transmit to the shared use of the Russian side the relevant areas for military exercises. Considering that cooperation between the defense ministries of Abkhazia and Russia is based on a solid legal basis, the outrage of authorities in Tbilisi is completely incomprehensible.
As for the statement of the Georgian authorities on the destruction of the historical monument, in this case there is a distortion of the real situation. When cleaning the landfill area historical monument was really damaged. To examine the case and take appropriate measures have been already set up a special commission of experts of the Ministry of Culture and Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage and the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Abkhazia to assess the damage caused to the monument. The results of the commission's work will be announced through the media, and can be read by any interested person or authority.
The appeal of Tbilisi to UNESCO over the damaged monument is puzzling. We recall to the Georgian side, that at the time of War of Abkhazia in 1992-1993, Georgian troops ruthlessly destroyed priceless historical and cultural values, seeking to destroy all that is associated with the history and culture of Abkhazia. However, at that time such "little things" did not worried the Georgian leaders.
We call on the Georgian side to stop politicize any facts related to the state of the monuments and other cultural property situated within the territory of the Republic of Abkhazia.
Abkhazian Foreign Ministry is ready to assist in the establishment of contacts between the specialists of the Ministry of culture and preservation of historical and cultural heritage of Abkhazia and UNESCO experts to develop a mechanism of joint protection of the historical and cultural heritage of the Republic of Abkhazia".
